Different Kinds of Solar Lights
There are a few different shapes and sizes that solar lights can come in. It’s important for the sake of this article to familiarize yourself with them as it’s relevant to the advice here. So, when we say solar lights on our lawn, what do we mean?
Well, most of us mean the in-ground solar lights installed into the ground that gives a nice and subtle look. These lights are a lot easier to deal with than the other type. The other type of solar lights is the ones that are above ground. You stick them into the ground and they’re almost like little lampposts.
For the sake of this article, we will only be discussing in-ground solar lights, as these are the most common. So, here is a complete step-by-step on how to mow around solar lights on your lawn.
How to Mow Around Solar Lights – Step by Step
Step 1: Mow the Bulk of Your Lawn Normally
The first thing you’re going to do is mow the bulk of your lawn as normal. Before we get into mowing around these lights, we want to get the easy part out of the way. So, mow your lawn as you normally would, making sure to avoid the area surrounding the lights.
Keep mowing until all that’s left is the area around the lights. Once you have done this, you can go ahead to the next step.
Step 2: Mow Around the Area
Now that you have effectively mowed the entire lawn save for this one section with the lights, we can mow that as well. Continue to avoid the lights, but mow around them as close as you can get without going over them.
Be a little more careful with your mowing now, you don’t want to go over the lights just yet. Basically, make a box of untrimmed grass in the closest area to the lights. All other areas outside of this box must be mowed. Once you have done this, you can move on to the next step.
Step 3: Mow Over the Lights
Once you have gone over all the previous areas, all that’s left is to go over the lights! If your lights are in the ground and at the same level as the ground, you should be able to go over them just fine. However, if you want a little extra guarantee that nothing will go wrong, set the blades on your mower to be up higher.
Go over the lights carefully, and make sure nothing is scraping or hitting the blade. None of that should happen, but it’s still best to be on the lookout and be cautious. Go over everything until you’ve got as much grass as possible.
Step 4: Weed Wack Any Extra Grass
Once you’ve gone over the lights, you can put your mower away and grab a weed wacker. Go over the areas that you may have missed around the lights or from your blade being too high. Make sure that everything is evenly cut and looks good.
This step isn’t always necessary. When you go over the lights, you may very well get all the grass cut. But if you don’t, this extra step is for you. Once you have done this, move on to the final step.
Step 5: Clean Off the Lights
Now that we’re all done with trimming the grass, make sure you take some time to clean up the lights afterward. You don’t want to leave grass clippings on the lights, you want to keep them all nice and clean. So, with your hand, gently brush away all the clippings off of your lights.
Once you have done this, you’re all done! You’ve completed all the necessary steps to mow over your solar lights.
Can You Mow Over Solar Lights
Generally speaking, yes, you can mow over solar lights. Just make sure that the lights you plan to mow over are level with the ground and therefore are able to be mowed over. Of course, solar lights that are above ground cannot be mowed over.
It’s important to note that while you can mow over the in-ground solar lights, it’s best to do a test or two before you go over them. Do this by rolling the mower over a few of the lights while the mower is turned off. This is just an extra precaution you can take to ensure you won’t destroy your lights.
Can You Mow Over Above Ground Solar Lights?
We sort of already went over this, but in case it needs to be stated again: no, you cannot mow over top of anything that is above the ground. Anything such as in-ground lights or stepping stones can easily be mowed over with caution, as they are level with the ground and therefore can be mowed over.
When it comes to above-ground lights, it may be best to take them off of your lawn when you’re mowing. Store them in their box with bubble wrap and leave them until you’re done with your lawn work. This is the best way to avoid ruining the above-ground lights.
Overall, you can easily mow over in-ground solar lights if you follow these steps. However, it’s important to always be mindful of how you’re mowing. Setting your blade to be a bit higher and being extra cautious when you mow over the lights is essential in protecting them.
If you follow these steps, you’ll surely be able to maintain your lawn’s beauty while also keeping your solar lights safe. Make sure to be extra careful and take it one step at a time. If you do this, you’ll be well on your way to a freshly mowed lawn, lights and all.
