When trying to maintain your lawn, using either bleach or roundup will give you the weed removal result you’re seeking. Both have their strengths and weaknesses and have different reasons why they’re good for lawn maintenance. In this guide, we’ll explain bleach vs. roundup for weeds so you can determine which one is the best for you.

Does Bleach Kill Weeds?

Yes bleach can kill weeds, but you’re placing your lawn at risk. Bleach is considered a toxic herbicide, meaning that it will negatively affect your plants, grass, and other lawn equipment if it’s overused.

If you plan to use bleach for your lawn, start by applying a small amount to a patch of test soil. This will let you determine if the grass needs more or less bleach. You’ll have a short-term solution against growing weeds on your lawn by continuously spreading bleach at a cautious yet effective level.

Alternatively, you can use herbicides to help with killing weeds. It saves you time and effort since you don’t have to reapply it multiple times like you would with bleach. Bleach should only be used sparingly, as it can lead to root burn, which can ruin your lawn if it’s not managed effectively.

Does Bleach Kill The Soil?

An excessive amount of bleach will cause your soil to decay. If you’re going to use it as a spray, then spray it on the targeted weeds and plants you’re trying to affect. Before spraying, you could mark the area to have accurate coverage over your soil.

Bleach needs to be used with caution. You can cause discoloration of your grass, root decay, and weaken the soil quality if it is not used correctly. Bleach can penetrate the soil and cause it to dry out the nutrients that it needs to survive.

In addition, bleach contains chlorine which will also get into the soil when used in large amounts. Bleach will kill the soil because it places the soil and plants at an acidic pH level. This can lead to more distress on your soil, making it difficult for your lawn to grow.

Chlorine has an 11 pH balance. Due to its high pH level, you have to be careful when using it on your soil. The high pH levels will inhibit its use of nutrients such as magnesium, iron, and nitrogen, which are essential for your plant’s growth.

How Can I Use Bleach to Kill Weeds?

You can use bleach to kill weeds by placing a solution of bleach inside a spray pump. This is a lighter and more garden-friendly solution than just pouring bleach.

Next, you’ll want to spray bleach directly on the targeted areas of the lawn. You’ll want to use it on weeds that are found between driveways and pavers. You’ll want to repeat the application on grass and weeds that did not get removed from the previous application. Wait at least 2-3 days before reapplying to ensure that your soil has enough time to recover.

If there are any dead weeds, pull them out of your garden. This will ensure that the yard will be clean. For weeds with a high growth rate (wild onion, dandelions, creeping charlie), you’ll need to reapply it 2-3 times to work correctly.

Unlike herbicides, bleach requires more maintenance. That’s because the chemicals inside of it can be dangerous if not measured beforehand.

How Can I Use RoundUp to Kill Weeds

To use a herbicide such as RoundUp, you’ll have to mix 1.5 ounces (3 tablespoons) of the RoundUp herbicide with a gallon of water. This ensures that you’ll have a solution that prevents weeds from regrowing on your lawn.

Another thing you’ll have to remember is to only kill the weeds you’re trying to control. You’ll want to be precise when using RoundUp, as it can kill existing grasses and weeds to root.

Bleach vs. Round – What Is Better For Killing Weeds

Safety

For safety, you’re better off choosing RoundUp for killing weeds. Since it is a herbicide, it doesn’t require you to use it extensively to receive the desired result. So you’ll have to use it two times at most to ensure your lawn is clear from weeds.

However, bleach has corrosive chemicals, irritating your eyes or burning your skin. So you have to take more proper care when planning on using bleach as a DIY weed killer. If you do plan on using bleach, make sure you:

Wear proper safety gloves and goggles

Make sure there are no children, pets, or elderly people when you spray

Don’t mix bleach with other chemicals until you’ve tested their reaction.

Pre-test a small area before applying bleach to the entire lawn

RoundUp wins in this category because it’s less invasive to your garden. You’ll still want to wear the right safety gear when in use, but it won’t be as harmful to your body as bleach.

Winner: RoundUp

Effectiveness

Bleach can be effective, but only for the short term. For instance, when placed on the soil, it still gives the weeds a chance to grow back. You’ll have to wait longer to ensure that you get the most out of your bleach product.

In comparison to RoundUp, it takes 12 hours to 7 days to show its results. This is more effective than bleach because it can spread through the root of the weeds, making it easier for them to be removed.

Winner: RoundUp

Accessibility

You’re more likely to find bleach than RoundUp in your local market. This makes it more accessible to the average consumer and is one of the reasons why it is a popular DIY choice. Most of the time, you’ll be able to find RoundUp online, but it might not be as common as bleach.

Winner: Bleach

Can You Mix Bleach With Roundup

It is not recommended to mix bleach with RoundUp. While it may seem like a good idea, you’re adding extra stress to your grass and soil. This will make the weeds stay out of your lawn, but you might be adding long-term damage if you use too much bleach/RoundUp within the mixture.

Conclusion

To conclude, both bleach and roundup can be used to manage weeds within your lawn. Through consistent use, you’ll find that what works the best for you.

Yes, weeds can grow in sand if left unattended. If you don’t take care of them beforehand, they can quickly populate an area and become a nuisance to your plants. Weeds can grow on any type of sand, and in this brief guide, we’ll show you how to manage them correctly.

Can Weeds Grow in Sand?

Like grass, weeds can grow in sand. The difference between soil and sand is that sand cannot hold nutrients correctly. While they can grow in sand, the weeds will have to work harder to grow there.

If you currently own sand, there is a chance that the beach salt will kill the weeds. However, the salt might damage the plants that are sensitive to salt. Basically, the salt will kill the plants, but the weeds will continue to grow from the roots.

How to Keep Weeds From Growing in Sand

To prevent weeds from growing on sand, it’s best you get protective gear first. Start by wearing long sleeves, gloves, long pants, safety goggles, and a dust mask, so your eyes aren’t damaged.

If you’re going to trim or workaround plants before or after eliminating the weeds, take time to clean your cutting and digging tools via a household cleaner (Lysol) or rubbing alcohol.

Removing Weeds Manually

Since sand has a loose texture, it’s easy to remove weeds from it manually. You can use a rake, a stirrup, or a hoe to uproot your weeds and remove it from the soil. However, weeds such as dandelions are deep-rooted, meaning that they require a blade or a pulling tool to loosen up the sand before you uproot the weeds.

This can be a strenuous activity, especially if you’re a senior gardener. While removing weeds manually is a good skill, it will be more difficult as you age. We’ll explain more about herbicides in the next section.

Chemicals and Herbicides

Using chemical-based herbicides is necessary if a large group of weeds is growing in your lawn. If you plan on using herbicides on sandy soil, make sure that you’re careful if the water is high. Herbicides like imazaquin and atrazine products can travel via the soil and can potentially damage the groundwater.

Pre-emergent herbicides are effective at killing weeds before they grow into the soil. While the herbicide doesn’t stop germination, they do halt the growing process. Also, they aren’t effective on weeds that are actively growing.

One disadvantage of using preemergent herbicides is that they can interrupt the germination of vegetable, grass, and flower seeds. On average, you should wait approximately four weeks after applying it to your soil or sand.

However, you should use post-emergent herbicides on actively growing weeds. Some of these herbicides target grassy or broadleaf weeds. Other herbicides such as glyphosate products will kill desirable plants and weeds quickly.

For optimal results, avoid using weed killers on windy days, as the herbicide will endanger the entire landscape.

Use Artificial Grass

Instead of always fighting to pull weeds from your lawn, you can opt to use artificial grass instead! What was previously viewed as taboo, artificial grass is starting to become a good alternative to natural grass.

One benefit of using artificial grass is that it creates an attractive lawn and is low-maintenance. It is also a good choice for pets and children as it allows them to run on the grass, unlike natural grass.

Artificial grass is durable enough to withstand a wide range of uses, and it won’t be discolored by dog urine. Using this form of grass removes the hassle of pulling out weeds, and you don’t have to worry about mowing the grass either.

Add Mulch

Can weeds grow on sand? You can prevent this from happening by adding mulch to the area. Mulch is an attractive landscaping option, but it can also prevent weeds from growing and infesting your lawn.

To apply, add bark mulch (2 inches). Adding too much will starve the soil of oxygen, which is necessary for the plants to grow. You might find out that you might have to add more mulch every year, but that’s a better alternative than consistently pulling weeds out throughout the year.

In addition, bark mulch is good at retaining moisture through your beds because it can slow down evaporation. This will help reduce the watering time as well. Bark mulch works well at keeping moisture in your flower beds because it helps reduce evaporation, which helps you save time on watering your lawn.

In addition, bark mulch is good at regulating soil temperature. So make sure it remains cool during the summer by blocking it and insulating it during the winter. You’ll keep your plants protected from frost and ice through proper insulation.

Reduce the Gap Between Shrubs and Plants

You can prevent weed growth by ensuring that your shrubs and plants are so close together that they block out any emerging weeds. It does this by blocking out the sun and denying the room the weeds need to grow.

Usually, you can reduce the spacing from the plants by 25%. These recommendations will help the plant not touch anything until it reaches full maturity. So always plan out your lawn beforehand to ensure that your plants are protected from any growing weeds.

Will Sand Stop Weeds From Growing?

Sand won’t stop weeds from growing. Instead, it will make the weeds grow at a slower rate than regular grass. Weeds will still continue to grow in your lawn, and the best way to prevent this from happening is through either natural methods or herbicides.

F.A.Q.

Can Grass Grow Through Sand?

Grass can grow through the sand. That’s because the grass can be affected by other factors. For instance, the grass has microbes inside of it, and like plants, it can grow via photosynthesis.

With photosynthesis, it states that plants are able to grow through direct (UVA, UVB) and indirect sunlight. This means that your grass will grow through your sand, especially once it receives water throughout the seasons.

Many commercial weed killers are available on the market these days, but you might be worried about them damaging your soil and killing other plants.

Yet, various household products are available, which can be very effective but offer a more natural alternative to kill your pesky weeds.

Baking soda is a very viable substance that can be used to attack weeds that are proliferating your lawn, as well as numerous other places where they can crop up.

Now we’ll look into what baking soda is, why baking soda is useful for killing weeds, and how to use it to its full effect.

What is Baking Soda?

Sodium bicarbonate, bicarbonate of soda, or just baking soda, is a chemical compound that generally comes in white powder form.

Its intended purpose when store-bought is to add some fluffiness to baked goods, but for a long time, people have realized it’s beneficial for cleaning, and it can be used against weeds.

Also, due to its high alkaline content, it’s an effective antacid treatment, and it’s effective at whitening teeth. So it really is a wonder chemical that’s readily available from your local store and very cheap to buy for the home.

Plus, another word for sodium is salt – and weeds can’t handle salt that well, especially in concentrated doses.

Natural Methods

Like vinegar (also another great way to attack weeds), baking soda is a natural substance. And, if possible, it’s always best to try and use natural methods to kill weeds, as well as pests and diseases.

Read More:

Bleach Vs Vinegar – Which Is Better To Kill Weeds

Does Ammonia Kill Weeds? (How to kill weeds with Ammonia)

Burning Weeds vs Roundup – Which is Better for Weeds ?

Natural methods are the least intrusive to the environment and don’t pose serious health risks when compared to manufactured chemicals.

If you choose to use commercial chemicals for weed killing, you should expect a lot of collateral damage to your grass and other plants in your garden.

Furthermore, when your plants and trees become weakened by such chemicals, they become vulnerable to attack from diseases and pests.

Therefore, we believe that any non-natural weed killers should only be used as a last resort.

How to Apply Baking Soda to Weeds

To use your baking soda most effectively, you should apply it to each weed plant individually.

It’s also a good idea to use rubber gloves in this process.

The straightforward method…

Quite simply, cover each weed plant thoroughly from the very bottom of its stem right up to the tips of its leaves.

This may be quite a time-consuming process, but it will be worth it if you want to keep your lawn looking healthy.

If baking soda does get onto your grass, it will kill or damage it. So the individual application method is the least intrusive.

However, if you don’t want to spend time with such a laborious process, you could carefully pour baking soda over your weeds.

Then, later on, you can reseed your lawn, where patches of grass have been killed or damaged.

With driveways, patios, and graveled areas, baking soda is an ideal and natural way of attacking weeds in such a simple way.

All you have to do is pour the baking soda over all the cracks or affected areas.

The baking soda, vinegar, dish soap remedy…

For an extremely powerful natural weed killer, you can add vinegar and dish soap with baking soda.

You can opt to add water to the mixture, although your homemade weed killer will work better if it’s more concentrated with baking soda and vinegar.

Vinegar contains acetic acid, which draws all the moisture out of weeds – even dandelions.

You can add dish soap because it allows the baking soda and vinegar to stick onto the weeds better for more potent results.

Also Read -> Does Vinegar Kill Weeds to the Root?

Make a Spray

To make a spray, mix up a ratio of two cups of vinegar with one cup of baking soda and a few drops of dish soap.

You should put the baking soda in first and then the rest of the ingredients, and before you screw the nozzle on, just let the mixture fizz out for a few seconds.

Alternatively, you can apply the baking soda to all the weeds you want to kill and then spray the vinegar and dish soap after.

But the first method is probably better as the dish soap will help the baking soda stick on better.

Lastly, instead of putting all of these ingredients into a spray bottle, you could mix them in a bucket.

Then, wearing rubber gloves, you can massage the mixture over each individual weed plant.

This method might be the best way to avoid catching other plants and damaging them.

Make a Paste

With the same ingredients, now use two parts baking soda to one part vinegar.

Again, once the mixture fizzles down, you can then apply the paste to weeds or cracks in your driveway using rubber gloves.

Keep in mind:

Both of these mixtures will be extremely potent, so be careful not to add it to the surrounding soil or grass – as you may have issues growing anything in those spots again!

Will Baking Soda Kill Weeds Permanently?

Ultimately, just using baking soda alone can kill weeds permanently. In lawns and gardens, baking soda serves as a herbicide on young and actively growing weeds.

It kills weeds by removing water from plant cells, resulting in dried foliage, just like salt.

Baking soda kills weeds, causing the leaves to dry up by desiccating them. It’s the salt content that extracts water from plant cells, and so the weeds are practically starved of their much-needed water supply.

Important Considerations

Before you jump straight in with applying baking soda to all your weeds, we have to remind you that too much baking soda can severely damage your soil and prevent future plant growth.

For example, if you live near the ocean, your soil may have a higher salt content than inland soils.

Therefore, we recommend testing different baking soda strengths to find out what concentration levels will work best.

Test in a place where you don’t mind damaging the soil, and if you want to make the baking soda weaker, just add water to dilute it.

The easiest way to do all this is with the use of a spray bottle.

However, if you live in a region where there is a lot of rainfall, you may not have to worry about damaging your soil because the rain will just wash the baking soda away.

Alternatively, after leaving the baking soda solution on your weeds for a couple of weeks, you can hose your lawn down thoroughly to wash out your homemade weed killer.

The Best Time to Apply Baking Soda to Weeds

Early in the day is the best time to use baking soda on your weeds. In the morning, plants are more active, and their pores are open, and so your baking soda weed killer can work its magic better.

Warmer weather is also desirable as baking soda’s effects are accelerated by temperatures above 80 degrees Fahrenheit.

After one week of application, water the weeds a little if there hasn’t been any rain – a little water helps soak the baking soda to the roots.

Some final tips include:

Where a protective mask during the application process

Cover important plants with plastic sheeting so they won’t get damaged

Make sure to test, test, and test again before treating your entire lawn!

The Takeaway

For an easy-to-find, cheap, and proven way to prevent and kill weeds, you can use baking soda.

If you want an extra powerful natural weed killer, use vinegar and dish soap in the mixture.

To make your baking soda weed killer weaker, just add some water until you find a preferred balance to suit your needs.

In the end, we think it’s much better first to try natural weed killers before commercial herbicides.

Of course, if you have a severe weed infestation, you could introduce more powerful weed killers alongside your natural ones until you find a happy medium.

There are innumerable reasons people get into gardening. Perhaps they have a passion for growing and nurturing something by hand. Others enjoy the opportunity it affords them to commune with nature without having to leave their property. And some just enjoy the fresh air it provides the area.

Whatever your reason for loving to garden, one way that you may not have tried is adding pebbles to your garden. It seems counterintuitive – why would you want rocks cluttering up the very place you designated for plants, but there are benefits to having pebbles around your plants for which you likely haven’t accounted.

Laying pebbles over soil reduces the likelihood of erosion during heavy rain. They also protect your soil from overexposure to sunlight. Gardening pebbles are also significantly easier to manage than the constant care and attention required for grass.

However, as great as they can be for your garden, both pebbles and pea gravel are highly susceptible to some of the peskiest weeds around, but fortunately, there are ways to deal with them.

Tips on how to stop weeds from growing through pebbles

Weed Killer

Traditional weed killers work well on weeds growing through pebbles, particularly glyphosate-based products like Roundup. Glyphosate kills the weed’s membrane and washes it out of the soil quickly, but it’s vital that you avoid spraying it on any desirable plants near the weeds.

Many homeowners prefer to keep their pebble gardens free of any plants. For this, Roundup 365 is recommended. Not only will this destroy the weeds there, but it’ll also prevent any new ones from sprouting for up to a year.

Pre-emergents such as Roundup are ideally applied in spring or fall for the best results. If, for some reason, your weed problem continues despite liberal application, using a pre-emergent, post-emergent combination such as Atrazine is your best option.

As long, of course, as you use these products with careful, responsible aim. Don’t forget, these are non-selective weed killers, and they’ll harm the plants you want as well.

Salt

A natural alternative to commercial weed killers that some may fear harmful to the environment, salt is a natural dehydrator. So when it comes into contact with the soil, it draws the water from the weeds, dehydrating them and making it more difficult for them to germinate later.

But unlike bare soil, you can’t just drop a spoonful above the weed. Instead, try:

1 cup of salt

3 cups of boiling water.

Once the salt has dissolved in the water, pour the mixture on the infected area. Mixing it also keeps the salt from blowing away should wind pick up.

For larger areas, however, boiling saltwater may not be all that realistic. For areas like this, spread the salt by hand over the pebbled area, then pour water immediately. As with most natural methods, salt isn’t choosy about what kind of plants it harms.

Be sure to avoid exposing any plants you wish to encourage, and never let any saltwater spill. It’s always better to be precise in your treatment.

Boiling Water

Boiling water hasn’t been used as a torture method since medieval times, but it’s one of the fastest and cheapest ways to kill weeds growing through pebbles. It’s a fairly self-explanatory process, just boil some in a kettle or pot, then carry it to the area you want to clear and pour.

This method isn’t particularly useful for larger areas, but it works well for fast, easy clean-up. Keep in mind, however, that you’re dealing with scalding temperatures that could cause permanent damage to your skin, so it’s essential never to pour with open-toed shoes or shorts and always wear oven mitts.

Flame Weeding

A quality flame weeder or weed torch can be found for the cost of a weed killer, and it works just as well. This is ideal for large pebbled areas. You don’t need to char the weed, simply get it to wilt. This is ideal, as you don’t want to damage the rocks by holding the flame over them for long periods of time.

Fire causes the weed’s cell to explode, killing it permanently. Flame weeders are especially good at avoiding any desirable plants, but during dry seasons, it’s important to use them with caution. The last thing you want is some kind of small brush fire on your property. Never use a flame weeder around any dry mulch or wood chips.

Landscape Fabric

After getting rid of weeds, there’s an overwhelming desire to never have to deal with them again. One way to help this become a reality is to form some kind of barrier. Permeable landscape fabric is one of the best defenses against weed growth. It allows water to reach the soil while still stopping weeds from taking root.

Apply a landscape fabric by first raking the pebbles to one side, then laying the fabric down in sections. Or you can remove the pebbles entirely and then lay the fabric. This creates a barrier that prevents weeds from growing.

The thicker the fabric, the less likely weeds will grow through. It’s also important to note that foot and vehicle traffic may damage the fabric, allowing long-rooted weeds like dandelions to find their way to the top.

Most weeds are also airborne, which means they can also land above the fabric and seed anyway. For these, you can rely on some of the solutions listed above.

Edging Border

Installing a metal border of 3.5 inches high is a great solution to weed growth that provides some unexpected benefits. With a border, you get:

Stops weeds from taking root underneath your pebbles.

Keeps pebbles contained. Apart from being more aesthetically pleasing, a thick, contained covering of pebbles will be less likely to sprout weeds.

Keeps dirt away, making it more difficult for weeds to grow.

It helps to think of an edging border like any other wall – it’s there to protect and defend from weed invasion.

Top Off Pebbles

For effective ground cover, you realistically want 3.5 inches of pebbles, gravel, or crushed stone to prevent weeds from growing through them. Thinner coverings will be penetrable by weeds.

If your pebble covering has grown thin due to erosion, foot and vehicle traffic, high wind or just being spread beyond their boundaries, it stands less of a chance against weeds. It’s a good idea when you notice your pebble layer growing thin to top off the area with new pebbles. This will help prevent weed growth.

Soil Preparation

If you’re trying to reclaim an area once infested with weeds or are starting a new garden, one method in weed prevention starts before you even lay any pebbles. It takes a little more work but preparing soil where you want pebbles before you spread them will help fight weeds. Simply,

Remove existing pebbles from area

Treat the soil with a pre-emergent of your choice, be it a product or homemade.

Lay 3-inch layer of sand or mulch

Apply your pebbles 3.5 inches thick

This dual-layer of protection, with the added mulch or sand, will do a lot in your fight against weeds. Even if the landscape fabric gets punctured, the added layer will do a lot in stopping weeds from sprouting.

Consider Replacing Pebbles

If you’ve had several outbreaks of weeds in your pebbles, then there’s clearly an underlying cause for the issue. When nothing else seems to work, it might be time to think about replacing the pebbles with brand new material.

After you’ve purchased new pebbles, you might want to treat the soil for that added protection, just to be on the safe side. If the area allows for it, consider other replacements as well, such as a patio or a pool deck.

Weeds are a nuisance, particularly in a pebble garden. They can ruin what otherwise would be a beautiful, serene retreat, ideal for those looking to commune with nature in peace. As you can see, there are plenty of options for dealing with even the most resilient weeds. Glyphosate-based weed killers are especially handy in cases such as these.

But it’s understandable why some may not want to commit to a corporate weed killer. One doesn’t have to go far online to read horror stories about them. That’s why so many homeowners opt for a homemade solution such as saltwater or boiling water.

Still, it may not be enough. You may have to commit to some much more serious treatments, including soil preparation and landscape fabric, to permanently take care of your problem. But over time, whether by foot traffic or otherwise, even those solutions can be damaged, allowing long-rooted weeds like dandelions to penetrate the surface.

Don’t let this discourage you, as with dual treatments and extensive care, you can sustain a beautiful pebble garden.

However you decide to treat them, you’re not at risk of running out of solutions for weeds. After all, it’s your garden, and how you commit to making it beautiful is as personal an expression as the rest of it.

As a gardener, you’re probably familiar with pesky weeds and their resilience to popping up all throughout your beautiful garden or yard.

Even though this is just a part of the joys of gardening, you’re not alone in wishing that you could find a way to get rid of the weeds once and for all.

While there may not be a magic cure-all, there are many options out there for helping diminish any weeds that have started popping up, one of them being water softener salt.

If you’re curious about using this method of killing weeds, this article will go over everything you need to know.

Will Water Softener Salt Kill All Plants?

Unfortunately, yes, water softener salt isn’t selective on which plants it gets rid of, meaning it could also kill off the plants you want to keep. For this reason, it’s best to use salt in areas that aren’t right beside wanted plants, as there is no way to effectively ensure the saltwater runoff won’t find its way to their root systems too.

In secluded patches of weeds or along the cracks of your driveway, this method is a great option, although for spot-treating throughout your garden—maybe not so much.

You don’t want to risk killing your desired plants just to get rid of a few weeds, so be sure to use the water softener salt method with caution.

How Exactly To Use Water Softener Salt to Kill Weeds

This method of abolishing weeds is not only effective but also fairly simple. Salt works as a weed killer by sucking the water out of the plant, which they, of course, need to survive.

Using water softener salt will not only kill the weeds, but it’ll also keep them from popping back up in that area for a couple of months to a couple of years.

There are a couple of ways to go about using this method, so we’ll go over them both so that you can decide which one works best for you.

Method to Use if You Don’t Have Kids or Pets Playing in the Area

Step 1: Sprinkle the water softener salt at the base of the weeds you’re looking to kill. You’ll want to adjust the amount you use to the size of the patch of weeds, so keep that in mind when purchasing and sprinkling the salt. For example, a 1/4 cup of salt will kill a smaller patch of weeds, but you’ll want to use more if you’re killing a larger area.

We recommend using this water softener salt below.

Step 2: Combine one cup of the salt with one gallon of boiling water, making sure the salt gets properly dissolved. While it’s still hot, pour the hot water mixture directly onto the weeds.

Step 3: Combine half a cup of the salt with one quart of white vinegar, then mix until it’s completely dissolved. After that, pour the mixture into a spray bottle and then spray it onto the weeds.

With three short steps, this method is quick and simple, although if you have any particularity stubborn weeds, you can always repeat this process a few days after the first application.

This method is the most effective, as the sprinkled salt will continue to dissolve as the days go by, although if you have any pets or kids that may ingest the salt, it’s best to use method two.

Method to Use if You Do Have Kids or Pets Playing in the Area

Step 1: Heat two cups of water and add one cup of water softener salt, stirring until it’s dissolved. Since you won’t be sprinkling any whole salt chunks around the weeds, the salt ratio in this method is higher.

Step 2: Pour hot saltwater mixture onto weeds, repeating every few days if necessary to completely kill off weeds.

Step 3: Combine salt and white vinegar until dissolved, then pour into a spray bottle. Mist the weeds generously, repeating every few days as needed. This step is somewhat optional in this method, as the repeated hot saltwater mixture may be enough on its own.

Although the two methods of using water softener salt as a weed killer are quite similar, the second one doesn’t require any whole pieces of the salt to be in your yard or garden, which is important if you have kids or pets that may try and consume it.

Once deciding which method is best for you, getting the supplies and carrying out the process of applying it to the weeds is fairly simple.

Will Water Softener Salt Kill Weeds?

Yes, water softener salt is effective at killing weeds when applied correctly. Not only will it kill them, but it’ll also stop them from growing back for up to a few years. Monitor the weeds to see how many times—if at all—you’ll have to repeat the process to kill them successfully.

If you do have to do the process a few times, don’t fret—the weeds will all eventually die.

Some of the more resilient weeds with more extensive root systems may just need to have the saltwater softener applied a few times over.

How Long Does It Take For Water Softener Salt to Kill Weeds?

This timeline can vary depending on the size of the weed and the weather conditions, but it usually takes around ten days for the unwanted plant to die fully.

Since this weed-killing method works by disrupting the plant’s growth cycle and pulling all the water out of it, it does take quite a few days to work completely.

Even though the weeds’ demise may be slow, the saltwater softener will still prove to be effective at getting rid of them.

Certain weeds with stronger root systems may be more resilient, so if this is the case, you may have to reapply the salt in order to fully kill them off. Plants—or as it seems, weeds in particular—will try their absolute hardest to continue to thrive even in conditions where the odds are stacked against them, so sometimes it takes a bit of extra effort to kill off those pesky weeds once and for all.

Conclusion

Many people use water softener salt as their weed-killer of choice, priding it on its effectiveness and simplicity. While fancy chemical killers do get the job done, salt is less harmful while still killing off even the most stubborn of weeds.

Not only that, but the method of application is fairly simple and quick, leaving you with more time to tend to the things around your yard and garden that you actually take pride in.

It’s important to remember that water softener salt isn’t selective at killing only weeds and avoiding your wanted plants, so use this method carefully and always be sure to plan ahead—you don’t want to accidentally get rid of one of your favorite plants.

When prepared and used correctly, water softener salt is an excellent and inexpensive weed killer, working by drawing all of the water out of the plant.

Next time you’re at the store deciding on which herbicide to purchase, consider water softener salt as a simple and easy way to get the job done.

In the growing season, there’s nothing more irritating than a particularly resilient weed – or a whole patch of them – sprouting around your more attractive greenery. Depending on the kind of weed, the level of difficulty killing them increases. It can get such a hassle that even some of the most environmentally-conscious gardeners resort to chemical-based weed killers.

And as worrisome as some of those chemicals may make you, they do get the job done. Besides, even some of the natural methods of weed-killing still present risks to both animals and people, so you’re always working with something potentially toxic.

But you may not know there are ways of dealing with the weeds in your lawn without any chemicals whatsoever. Since these methods are desirable to those with pets or concerns about the effects of chemicals on the environment, it seems as good a place to start as any.

Methods of Killing Weeds in Soil

By Hand

If you’re really dedicated to the old ways, you can take care of weeds simply by yanking them out of the ground. Be sure you have a good pair of gardening gloves, as the process is hard on your hands.

Having quality gardening tools on hand is imperative, as they’ll help you loosen the soil around the weed before pulling. When it comes time to pull, be sure to get it completely by the root so it won’t return.

Cornmeal

No one wants to spend an afternoon on their knees in the summer heat yanking every weed by hand, but few know of this much easier method. Corn gluten meal is like the Pill for weeds, killing them before they can germinate. Sprinkle it around your garden wherever weeds grow.

While it certainly stops them from sprouting, it has the same effect on other plant life. So you’ll want to wait until any plants or vegetables you’re encouraging are already established before using.

Mulch

Cover planting areas with mulch stops weed seeds from getting in the soil in the first place. As for the seeds already there, the mulch stops sunlight from reaching them. Additionally, it will retain moisture in the soil, enriching it.

Vinegar

Using vinegar in a spray bottle, pump or brush kills weeds, but there’s something of an art to it. Natural herbicides are great, except for the fact that they aren’t capable of differentiating between healthy, beautiful plants and weeds. Just spraying it everywhere is the gardening equivalent of napalming your lawn.

To safely apply vinegar, do it early in the morning to prevent heavy wind from letting it spread to other plants. The active killing ingredient in vinegar is activated by sunlight, so it’s ideal to spray it on a relatively cloudless day. And most importantly, spray directly on the weeds you intend to kill.

Newspaper

Hoarders, you are useful in the fight against weeds. Simply smothering weeds, similar to how mulch does, kills them and prevents new weeds from sprouting. Just laying a thick layer of old newspapers will prevent sunlight from reaching weeds.

Hose the soil down first, getting it nice and wet, lay the newspaper down, then wet it again. Finally, spread a layer of mulch over the newspaper. This not only kills weeds, but you’re also doing your part to recycle. Additionally, newspaper prevents earthworms from invading.

Old Shower Curtains and Carpets

If you’re really into recycling, this is a great way to get one last use out of otherwise useless items taking up space in your home. They should be used the same way newspapers are, and covered with mulch.

Vodka

Anyone who’s ever taken a shot of vodka knows it’s pretty dehydrating, which is exactly the kind of product you want when dealing with weeds. Mix one ounce of vodka – not the good stuff, no need to waste – with two cups of water and just a few drops of dish soap. This will dry out the weeds.

Boiling Water

What to kill weeds? Scald them like a 16th-century settler accused of witchcraft. After the water starts boiling on your stove, carry it over (oven mitts, please) and slowly pour a steady stream of piping hot water over the unwanted weeds.

Resilient, perennial weeds might take more than one application, but over time, they’ll stop returning every season. While oven mitts are the obvious precaution, it’s wise not to pour with open-toed shoes or shorts.

Salt

You’d be surprised how effective table salt – an everyday household product – is at killing weeds. Just a pinch at the base of each weed will knock them out over time. But salt also makes the soil uninhabitable for a few months, so you must be very deliberative just how much salt and where you apply it. Of course, you want to avoid getting it on any desirable plants.

Herbicidal Soap

Create your own herbicide with simple, household ingredients. Mix equal parts water, dish soap, and vinegar and pour it in a spray bottle. Once again, being discerning about where you spray it is key to preventing hurting your plants, but it’s an easy, cost-effective weed eliminator.

Weed Torch

Frankenstein was half-right. Fire’s bad when it spreads, but even firefighters start controlled fires in the forest to clear out dead trees that will likely burn on their own in a much more dangerous way later.

Using fire with a weed torch heats the water within the cells of the weed. When the water turns into steam, the cells explode, killing the plant. There’s no need to charbroil the weeds, simply getting them to wilt should do the trick. A weed torch takes practice, and should always be used with the utmost care, but once you get the hang of it, you’ll see how effective it is.

There is, however, a catch. A weed torch should never be used on poison plants such as ivy, as the poison oils within the plant will release into the air. Ultimately, this can have negative effects on both your eyes and lungs.

Soil Solarization To Kill Weeds

Soil solarization is a preventative method of killing weeds and stopping them from sprouting that is also organic, but the process is a little more involved. If you’re looking to start a fresh garden with clean soil, solarization is a great way to avoid dealing with a lot of weeds later on.

Since solarization involves getting to the root of your weed problem, there’s a lot of prep work to be done. First, hack down any tall vegetation in your lawn with a sickle, power trimmer, or whatever you prefer to use. The ground needs to be smooth and flat before you solarize, so you can’t leave any stumps around.

Run a lawn mower over the ground to further smoothen it. All the weeds should be at ground level now. You’ll then need to rent or purchase a large tiller to pull all of the weeds completely out of the ground.

The last bit of preparation just involves raking the land that was recently tilled, pulling out any seeds lying there. After going over the ground with the precision of a fine-toothed comb, moisten the soil with a hose.

Cover the raked area with plastic. Use cinder blocks to weigh the plastic down at the edges. Plastic can be anywhere from one to six millimeters in thickness. Leave the plastic over the soil for up to two months. In that time, the sun kills the weeds for you by cooking them.

Now your lawn truly has a fresh start and a chance to grow beautiful plants and grass uninterrupted.

There are plenty of other methods involving chemicals, but these natural ways can be just as effective and far less harmful. Whatever you decide, it’s up to you how you maintain a beautiful, clear lawn.

It’s likely since the concept of gardening began, we’ve been trying to rid our gardens of these pesky plants known as weeds. They come in all shapes and sizes, typically grow very rapidly, and suck nutrients out of your soil quicker than more desirable plant species – such as grass.

Furthermore, weeds can make your lawn or driveway look ugly, unkempt, and they spring up overnight if not appropriately controlled.

If you’re looking for a simple home remedy to rid your garden of weeds – both bleach and vinegar can be useful. But each substance has its downsides, and its best uses are more specific.

Bleach or Vinegar – Which is Better to Kill Weeds?

The straight answer is that bleach will be more efficient at outright killing weeds over vinegar. The vinegar you have at home, at least, isn’t going to be strong enough on its own to deal with a large weed infestation. However, there are vinegar-based herbicides out there that can be very effective at this.

Will Bleach Kill Weeds Permanently?

If you are going to apply bleach to an area in the garden, it won’t just kill the weeds but everything else there too! It’s also harmful to humans, and it can leave lasting damage to your soil.

Yet, bleach is very useful for particular weed-killing purposes…

For example, if you have a paved driveway, it’s common to see weeds growing in the cracks in between the paving. As well, in many graveled areas, weeds can start to spring up through the stones and make the space look untidy.

In both cases, bleach is a clear winner for killing the weeds and everything else between the cracks – making your driveway or graveled area look clear and well kept again.

Wherever you intend to apply ordinary domestic bleach to your weeds, it’s important to leave it on for a period of at least two to four days. If you don’t leave the bleach on long enough, it won’t penetrate deep enough into each plant’s root system, which means they could later remerge.

Bear in mind, if you are going to use bleach, make sure to take the necessary safety precautions due to its harmful nature to humans. If you have children or pets, they need to be kept away from any areas where you apply bleach.

Therefore, an excellent time to bleach weeds is when you leave home for a holiday or out-of-town family visit. Just spray the weeds before you go, and when you return, they should have all died!

Does Vinegar Kill Weeds Permanently?

OK, so we said that household vinegar wouldn’t be very effective at dealing with a large weed infestation. However, it can be sprayed onto weeds as a good preventative measure – especially on young weeds.

Vinegar contains acetic acid, which kills weeds as well as other plants and vegetation. Domestic vinegar in your kitchen doesn’t have so much acetic acid and is relatively weak compared to specialist vinegar-based herbicides.

Nevertheless, domestic vinegar can provide a level of control if applied in its pure form. Older and more established perennial weeds will put up an intense fight against vinegar treatment, though.

The benefits of commercial vinegar herbicides…

Commercial vinegar herbicides contain a much higher percentage of acetic acid, generally between 20 and 25 percent – while domestic kinds of vinegar are usually around the five percent mark.

Burning Weeds vs Roundup – Which is Better for Weeds ?

The higher levels of acetic acid work to kill a large variety of weeds right down to their roots. Just be careful to try and not to spray all your other plants in the process. A less intrusive method of applying the herbicide is to wear rubber gloves and massage the liquid onto each weed individually – we’ll explain this creative process later.

A word of warning – commercial versions are harmful to humans because of their high acidity. Acetic acid can cause severe skin burns and damage to the eyes – please be careful! Also, if you are going to search for one of these vinegar-based weed killers, the vinegar will probably be labeled as acetic acid, not vinegar.

A good thing about vinegar-based herbicides, though, is that they aren’t going to cause as much damage to the soil as bleach would. And yes, they can kill weeds permanently – if they are strong enough and applied for the right period of time.

Can You Mix Bleach and Vinegar to Kill Weeds?

There are quite a few ways to make your own weed killer using household ingredients, but mixing bleach and vinegar together isn’t advisable. Bleach will be as potent as can be at killing weeds over a two-day period – so why would you need to add vinegar into the equation?

Instead, if you want to use either of these substances most effectively, you can mix them with two other household ingredients – dish liquid and salt.

We recommend vinegar for areas where you don’t want to damage nearby vegetation as much and bleach if you’re going to blitz an area completely.

Here’s how you do it…

Step 1

Get a big pot, fill it with water, add salt, and then bring it to a boil. For every two cups of water, use a ratio of one cup of salt. The salt will dissolve into the boiling water and is added for some extra weed destroying power!

Step 2

Allow the water to cool down before adding about half a teaspoon of dish liquid for every eight cups of water (just a few drops). The reason why dish liquid is added is that it will stick to the weeds when you spray the mixture – for a more potent effect.

Step 3

Safety calls at this point, so pull on a pair of rubber gloves as you’re going to get the bleach out. Even if you want to use vinegar at this point, it’s still a good idea to protect yourself. Now it’s up to you how much vinegar or bleach you want to add – but choose only one. The stronger the bleach or, the more acetic acid the vinegar has, the better.

Step 4

Pour the mixture into a spray bottle using a funnel, so things don’t get messy – and potentially dangerous. If you don’t have a funnel, carefully submerge the spray bottle into the pot to fill it up with your gloves on.

Step 5

Dry and warm weather conditions are ideal for when you want to spray your homemade weed killer. Whether you are using a vinegar or bleached-based mixture, keep in mind that they will be very harmful to other plants and your grass. So you’ll need to spray your weeds individually to limit any collateral damage.

Alternatively, instead of spraying the weeds, you could take a bucket of your weed killer with you and massage it onto each weed – wearing protective gloves, obviously. This method might be the least intrusive to your other plants and flowers.

After a few days, the weeds should have died out. At this point, you might want to flush the ground with water. Then finally, after a couple more days, add some grass seed to areas that have been damaged through the process.

The Final Verdict

Bleach and vinegar both have their uses for killing weeds, and they are readily available at home. Vinegar is the less invasive option and works better as a way of preventing further growth. Bleach should be considered if you want to destroy all plant life in one area – like the cracks on your driveway.

And if you don’t have either of these household items on your shelves at home, there is one last tip – use boiling water loaded with dissolved salt. Be super careful if using this primitive method, but it does work well for surface weeds.

If you’ve ever had a long, drawn-out conversation about gardening habits, surely the topic of weeds came up.

And it’s unlikely you encounter someone arguing for a weed’s preservation.

Of course not, weeds are an incredible nuisance, ruining the aesthetic of lawns nationwide.

But when the conversation turns to how to rid yards of weeds, there’s no consensus on a method.

You’ll likely hear more than 20 different weed remedies, some natural, some chemical.

That’s another big part of the debate.

With environmental concerns at an all-time high, and some troubling things learned about the chemicals used in weed control, the debate about whether to go all-natural or succumb to Big Chemical is a complicated one.

There’s more than one panic-inducing documentary to inform you, and they aren’t pretty.

The chemicals work great, but how safe are they for you, your children, and pets?

This is one of the reasons many go with home remedies for their weed problems.

Ammonia is one such remedy, but like any, there are certain precautions one must follow.

Ammonia is commonly used for killing weeds and grass, but it’s still toxic and should be treated as such.

It’s also important to remember that ammonia is not just potentially harmful to you and yours, it’s also not a selective weed killer.

So if you have plants you don’t want to be killed along with the weeds, ammonia may not be your best option.

Ammonia is effective, but excessive use will also cause damage to the soil, so one should be conservative with just how much they apply to their lawn.

Does Ammonia Kill Weeds Fast?

Ammonia gets to work fairly quickly, but not as fast as some other products. It kills them by seeping into the weed’s roots.

Once it gets inside, it dehydrates the weed to death. So while it takes a little longer, it’s quite thorough.

Thorough, but only if you spray the entirety of the weed you want to kill. If you miss any, there’s a chance it can regrow next season.

What Weeds Will Ammonia Kill?

Ammonia is adept at killing most common weeds. It’s most effective against:

Crabgrass – This annual lawn weed will be wiped out with ammonia down to the root, meaning it won’t be able to regrow the following season.

Dandelions – You’ve likely seen this perennial everywhere in your neighborhood, particularly in the Spring. It’s usually found around patios and driveways and can be eliminated with ammonia.

Poison Sumac – Despite this shrub being rather thick, ammonia has no problem killing it.

Common Ragweed – Those that suffer severe allergies due to ragweed’s nuisance will be relieved to know ammonia gets rid of it permanently.

Ground Ivy – Ammonia is probably the most effective method to eliminate this common lawn weed.

How To Kill Weeds Using Ammonia

When using an ammonia solution, it’s vital you follow these steps to protect yourself and any greenery you don’t want to be eliminated.

You’ll need a bucket, rubber gloves, a funnel, something to stir the mixture with, and a spray bottle.

Put on rubber gloves. If you have a mask, it’s recommended to use it. Goggles for your eyes are also a good idea.

Mix ammonia and water in a bucket (2/3 ammonia, 1/3 water)

Stir well and use the funnel to transfer the solution into a spray bottle with an adjustable nozzle.

Adjust the nozzle to a fine jet setting and spray directly on just a few weeds. Repeat until they die. This is known as performing a spot-test, and you should judge just how well the solution works before committing to it for the rest of the job.

If you feel the ammonia is doing the job well enough, continue spraying on all weeds you want to kill.

Remove your safety gear when you’re done. Get rid of the gloves and wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water.

Side Effects of Using Ammonia to Kill Weeds

You’ll likely be pleased with ammonia’s results, but we can’t stress the importance of the safety precautions enough.

When it’s mixed with other weed-killing chemicals, the fumes it produces are toxic to humans, and pets stand even less of a chance.

And as we mentioned before, improperly applying it on your lawn can result in you losing the plants you worked long to cultivate.

Inhaling ammonia causes immediate burning of the nose, throat, and chest.

This can cause edema in the respiratory system, leading to airway destruction or even failure. Children are even more susceptible due to their greater lung surface area-to-body ratio.

Worse, there’s no antidote for ammonia poisoning.

The effects can be treated, and most people recover, but prolonged exposure is a serious risk.

Should it have contact with your skin or eyes, the irritation is immediate and painful. Skin burns, permanent eye damage, and even blindness are possible.

Precautions When Using Ammonia

Fortunately, there are simple precautions that we’ve mostly discussed that will protect you and your loved ones, though we’d recommend keeping animals as far away from the product as possible.

Wearing rubber gloves is always necessary.

When it comes to using ammonia to kill weeds, any protective gear you opt to wear is going to be helpful, with the base necessity being a good pair of gloves.

Here are some option that we recommend for best gloves.

Can I Mix Ammonia with Other Herbicides?

We mentioned how toxic it can be to mix ammonia with other herbicides, however, that shouldn’t necessarily dissuade you.

In fact, mixing ammonium sulfate with herbicides containing glyphosate such as Roundup makes it more effective.

The ammonium sulfate increases the herbicide’s absorbability, meaning it should take care of the more persistent weeds like clover.

There are plenty of factors you should take into consideration when using ammonia to kill weeds, but sometimes the best option is a little risky.

And that risk is not an unmanageable one, so long as you wear the necessary protective gear and avoid spraying it near any plants you want to enjoy all season.

You don’t want to be the house on the block with a lawn full of overgrown, messy weeds.

Not only does it look unkempt, but it’s also going to give you a reputation. You’ve had neighbors like that – the Boo Radleys who avoid the rest of the community, who kids have urban legends about.

Fortunately, there are solutions to even the peskiest, most resilient weeds.

One of the simplest, most effective ways to kill the weeds in your lawn is with diesel fuel. It’s an excellent solution with one major caveat. Diesel is toxic to weeds because it is toxic to all plant life, killing them on contact.

That means any surrounding grass, flowers, or crops are likely to die as well.

However, with controlled, careful application, using diesel might still be an option worth trying.

Does Diesel Kill Weeds Permanently?

When you’re working to get rid of the weeds in your lawn, one of the lingering questions is whether or not they’ll reappear next season. It can be quite difficult to kill it right down to its root. Diesel sounds like a pretty effective weed killer, and for the most part, it is, however it’s not a permanent solution.

Diesel will kill the weed right down to the root, however, it will not be able to kill the seeds.

Once the fuel is washed away from the soil, the seeds are free to germinate once again.

How to Kill Weeds With Diesel

Using diesel to kill weeds is a fairly simple process, involving little more than a spray bottle for thick liquids, a jug, a shovel, and a funnel.

However, as we go through the steps, we’ll also tell you what not to do in order to save any plants you don’t want to accidentally eliminate.

Purchase up to two gallons of diesel from your local gas station.

Using the funnel, pour it into the spray bottle. Ideally, you’ll want to do this in your garage or somewhere away from plant life, to avoid spilling anywhere you don’t want it applied.

Directly spray on the weeds, ensure you get the plant, stem, and area around the roots of the weed.

Once the weeds are dead, use the shovel to pull them out at least 1 inch below the soil. This should prevent weeds from regrowing for the rest of the season.

It’s worth noting that diesel is toxic to plants, but it’s also not something you want to ingest.

There are some safety precautions necessary to protect both yourself and your plants.

Fuel is, of course, a fire hazard, and should be treated as such. Take the same precautions you would while filling up your car.

Apply the diesel in the early morning when there’s little chance of high winds. You should also check the weather and make sure you have a clear, rain-free forecast for at least 48 hours.

As we mentioned, diesel is harmful to your other plants. Avoid directly spraying any fuel on them.

Be sure to wear a mask when near the fuel. Breathing it irritates your respiratory system.

When finished, pour the fuel back into the jug rather than leaving it in the spray bottle. This will further prevent fire or inhaling the substance.

If you have well water, don’t use diesel in the soil. The fuel will mix with your drinking water.

Most importantly, as harmful as diesel is to you, it’s even more dangerous for your pet.

Some animals can develop neurological problems that lead to seizures or even death. Symptoms to watch for include drooling, shaking their head, pawing at the mouth, coughing, incoordination, tremors, staggering, and red, irritated skin.

If your pet is suffering from any of these symptoms, don’t try to treat them yourself. Take them to the vet immediately.

How Long Does It Take Diesel to Kill Grass?

After spraying, it takes up to 48 hours to completely kill grass, however, you will start to see the plants wilt in just a few hours. But it’s important to make sure it’s in contact with the grass for the full 48 hours, hence why rainstorms need to be avoided.

Can You Mix Roundup With Diesel? Will That Work Better?

Since both are very effective at killing weeds, mixing Roundup and diesel is even more effective than either product on its own.

Roundup works faster on the weeds, killing them in only a few hours It also kills the seeds, preventing further germination. So the two together are a perfect weed-eliminator.

How Long Does Diesel Last in the Soil?

While the fuel gets its job done in about two days or less, it remains in the environment for longer. Biodegradation of diesel fuel in soil takes approximately 84 days.

Concerned About Using Diesel? There Are Plenty of Alternatives

The environmental and health concerns of using diesel are understandably troubling to some.

That’s why so many people have turned to alternatives, both natural and unnatural, to go after their weed problems.

One such alternative is a propane weed torch. This tool has a very fine outlet that releases a small, controlled flame.

It’s popular because it leaves no chemical residue in the soil, water, or air and kills the weed’s seeds when used correctly. It also doesn’t upset the soil.

Used improperly, however, and you run the risk of setting your lawn on fire.

More natural alternatives include creating a weed barrier to limit their access to the sun. Using old, wet newspapers and mulch also robs the weeds of the nutrients they need to thrive.

And the most natural method of all, corn gluten meal or vinegar, is a 100% safe way to stop weeds from germinating.

There are ways to kill the weeds in your lawn both natural and extremely chemical. Given how resilient some weeds can prove to be, diesel is both an effective, quick, and cost-effective solution to knocking them out.

However, the environmental and health issues being around diesel presents are not trifling.

But with the right precautionary measures and expert precision, diesel shouldn’t be entirely ruled out.
